Bay Buchanan to lecture on the Failures of Feminism

Staff Writer

In one of the first events held by the C.C. Young Republicans group, created last year, political commentator Bay Buchanan will be giving a lecture in Gaylord Hall next week titled “The Failures of Feminism”. The lecture is sponsored by the Colorado College Young Republicans, Young America’s Foundation, with which Buchanan works, the Campus Activities Department, and the Political Science Department.

The Young America’s Foundation is a national organization of conservative youth that tries to raise awareness about conservative ideas to other young adults through events such as a Buchanan lecture or other conferences and seminars on college campuses.
“We always hope to promote debate on campus,” said John Gould, chair of the Political Science Department. “We’ve told…the Young Democrats that we’ll support an event of their choosing as well.” The lecture is also described as “an effort to encourage debate on CC’s campus” by the C.C. Young Republicans group.

As C.C. is considered a more liberal school, there are expectations that this event will draw some heated arguments. The lecture will be followed by a Q & A session with Buchanan during which students can respond to her speech.

Bay Buchanan served as Treasurer of the United States when Ronald Reagan was president. Since then, Buchanan has served as both political analyst and a talk show host on a variety of political talk shows on television. She is also the sister of famous conservative political commentator Pat Buchanan and managed his three presidential bids. In addition to her lecture tours, Buchanan is currently serving as a political analyst for CNN.

“The Failures of Feminism” is a lecture Buchanan gives regularly. It focuses on Buchanan’s belief that the benefits of the feminist movement have caused severe damage to the importance of family life in the nation. Buchanan’s past speeches on this topic have been said to grant credit to the strengths of the feminist movement, while also examining its negative impact on the institution of marriage.

Buchanan is also known to be extremely opposed to abortion and divorce, ideas that have been presented in her “Failures of Feminism” lecture at other campuses in the past. Buchanan serves as the president of The American Cause, an organization devoted to bringing attention to traditional conservative issues.

The C.C. Young Republicans described Buchanan as “a riveting speaker who will not disappoint.” She lectures around the country on such topics as second amendment rights, current events, education, feminism, immigration, the anti-abortion movement, and traditional values. On her page on the Young America’s Foundation website, her fee for speaking at events is generally listed between $3,000 and $5,000 dollars.

The event will take place in Gaylord Hall in Worner Center on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It is free of charge and open to all C.C. students and members of the Colorado Springs community.
