Ultimate frisbee flies into season
Last week, the Ultimate Frisbee league of Colorado College’s intramural sports program officially began play in what looks to be an exciting closure to another great season of intramural sports. Praised for its competitive yet laid-back feel, the league boasts ten teams with various skill levels. Some teams include experienced seniors and club ultimate frisbee members while other teams, like the up and coming team inZaneity, are made up of freshmen looking to prove themselves. Freshman Matt McNerney captains team inZaneity whose roster is made up entirely of freshmen from Slocum’s first floor south. At six-foot-three and two-hundred pounds, McNerney is anything but timid; however he notes that Ultimate Frisbee can get pretty competitive. “Things get pretty crazy out there”, says McNerney, whose team experienced first-hand the highly competitive, when they took on first-place team and defending champion: Bernie Madoff’s Ethical Compass. InZaneity lost the game 2-12 but as freshman Ellen Scully put it, “Not everyone can be champions at first; we have a lot more games left to play”. With over a month left to play, inZaneity has plenty of time to rebound from their first-game loss; however, they will have to take on a team much more experienced in Dem Loomis Assassinz if they hope to be in the running for the championship come this May.
Led by an all sophomore cast, as well as experienced club members in Jeff Hester, Josh Anderson, Alex Whiting, and Molly Sinnot, Dem Loomis Assassinz look to be well equipped for another championship run. Last year, Dem Loomis Assassinz came within one game of the championship when they lost to Team Pookie (now known as Bernie Madoff’s Ethical Compass) in the semi-finals. “We’re going to have to work hard but we’re hungry as hell for a t-shirt this year”, says Hester, who knows that a game against the defending champions is imminent.
Whether it be the upstart inZaneity or the elite teams in Bernie Madoff’s Ethical Compass and Dem Loomis Assassinz, only one team will don the champion shirts come this May.
